What on-page SEO means

Optimising individual pages so that search engines understand what they are about and users find what they came for. It includes content, title tags, meta descriptions, headings, URLs, images, internal links, structured data and page experience. It does not include links from other sites (off-page) or site-wide technical issues (technical SEO), though the lines blur.

The on-page SEO checklist

  • Search intent: the page type matches what ranks for the query (guide, service page, category, product)
  • Title tag: unique, descriptive, includes the primary phrase naturally, roughly 50–60 characters
  • Meta description: a compelling summary that earns the click; not a ranking factor but affects click-through
  • H1: one per page, states the topic clearly; H2/H3 structure the content logically
  • URL: short, readable, descriptive (/seo-audit-services/ not /page?id=123)
  • Content: answers the query completely, says something competitors do not, written by someone who knows the subject
  • Keyword use: primary phrase in the title, H1, first paragraph and naturally through the text; variants and related terms throughout; no stuffing
  • Internal links: links to and from related pages with descriptive anchor text
  • Images: compressed, modern formats, descriptive file names and alt text
  • Structured data: schema markup for the page type (FAQ, Article, Product, LocalBusiness, Service)
  • Page experience: fast, mobile-friendly, no intrusive interstitials, passes Core Web Vitals
  • Freshness: updated when facts change, with the date shown

Content quality and E-E-A-T

Google’s quality guidelines ask raters to judge experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust. On the page that means named authors with credentials, first-hand examples, cited sources, clear contact and company information, and accuracy. It matters most for health, finance, legal and other “your money or your life” topics but applies everywhere.

What no longer works

  • Keyword density targets and repeating the phrase a set number of times
  • Meta keywords tags (ignored since 2009)
  • Hidden text, doorway pages, exact-match anchor text everywhere
  • Word-count targets — length should match what the query needs
  • Spinning one page into dozens of near-duplicates

How to audit your on-page SEO

Crawl the site to find missing or duplicate titles, H1s and descriptions; check Search Console for pages with impressions but low clicks (improve titles) or ranking on page two (improve content and links); review the top-ranking competitors for each priority page and note what they cover that you do not. Our audit service does this across the whole site; our audit tools guide lists what to use yourself.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between on-page and off-page SEO?

On-page is what you control on your own pages; off-page is signals from elsewhere, mainly links and mentions.

How long should a title tag be?

Around 50–60 characters so it displays in full. Put the most important words first.

Do meta descriptions affect rankings?

Not directly, but a good one increases clicks, and Google often rewrites poor ones.

Is on-page SEO enough to rank?

For low-competition searches, often yes. For competitive terms you also need authority (links) and strong technical foundations.
