GEO vs SEO (and AEO): What’s the Difference and Which Do You Need?

GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) is the practice of getting your content cited inside AI-generated answers; SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is the practice of ranking in classic search results. They are not rivals. GEO sits on top of SEO: the same technical health, content quality and authority that earn rankings are what make a page worth citing. The difference is in the output you optimise for and a handful of extra practices.

Short answer: SEO gets you ranked. AEO gets you the direct answer box. GEO gets you quoted by AI. You need the foundation (SEO) before the other two work.

Definitions

SEO — Search Engine Optimisation

Improving a website so it ranks higher in organic search results for relevant queries. It spans technical SEO, on-page optimisation, content and link building. Read how SEO works.

AEO — Answer Engine Optimisation

Optimising content to win direct answers: featured snippets, “People Also Ask” boxes and voice-assistant responses. The emphasis is on answering a specific question precisely, early in the page, with supporting detail beneath.

GEO — Generative Engine Optimisation

Optimising content so generative AI systems — Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot — select and cite it when composing an answer. The emphasis is on clarity, structure, verifiable claims, consistent entities and recognisable authority.

Why GEO still depends on SEO

Generative engines retrieve candidate sources before they write. In Google’s case, AI Overviews are grounded on pages Google already indexes and ranks; in ChatGPT’s and Perplexity’s cases, live web search is used to fetch sources. If your page can’t be crawled, isn’t indexed, or sits on page five, it is rarely in the candidate set at all. Technical SEO, indexation and a reasonable ranking are prerequisites for GEO, not alternatives.

What GEO adds on top of good SEO

  1. Answer-first structure. State the answer in the first sentence under each heading, then expand. Models and snippet algorithms both favour this.
  2. Explicit, verifiable claims. Numbers, dates, sources and definitions give an AI something concrete to quote and attribute.
  3. Entity consistency. Your organisation, people, products and services described the same way on your site, in schema and across third-party profiles.
  4. Topical completeness. Covering a subject fully (pillar + cluster) makes your site the canonical source rather than one of many partial ones.
  5. Mentions where models look. Coverage on authoritative publications, forums and reference sites increases the chance your brand is named — classic digital PR with a new purpose.
  6. Clean, crawlable HTML. Content hidden behind JavaScript interactions, tabs or PDFs is less likely to be used.

AEO vs SEO vs GEO: which should you prioritise?

For most UK businesses the order is: fix SEO fundamentals first; then restructure your most important pages for AEO (direct answers to the questions your buyers ask); then extend into GEO with entity work, data-led content and digital PR. The good news is that each step improves the previous one — answer-first pages tend to rank better in classic search too.

How to measure GEO

There is no single “AI rank”. Practical measurement combines: manual or tool-based checks of AI Overviews and AI chat answers for a fixed set of commercial queries; referral traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and similar in GA4; brand-search volume trends; and the classic SEO metrics that underpin it all. We report on all of these in our AI SEO service.

Frequently asked questions

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. GEO depends on SEO. The sites being cited by AI are overwhelmingly the ones that already rank well and are technically sound.

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?

AEO targets direct-answer features in search (snippets, People Also Ask). GEO targets citations inside AI-generated answers. The techniques overlap heavily.

Can an agency guarantee AI Overview placement?

No. Citations vary by query, model and time. An honest agency optimises the factors that correlate with citation and reports what changes.

Does schema markup help with GEO?

It helps machines understand entities and relationships, which supports both rich results and AI understanding — as long as it reflects the visible content.

FAQ

Questions we get asked

What is GEO?

Generative engine optimisation — making your content the source that AI-generated answers (AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity) cite.

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. AI answers are built from indexed web pages; the credible, well-structured pages that SEO produces are the ones that get cited.

How do I measure AI visibility?

Track a fixed set of priority queries across AI platforms monthly, noting whether and where you are cited. Tools include Otterly, Peec and Profound.

Can you do GEO for us?

Yes — as a £350/month add-on to any package, a standalone programme from £750/month, or an AI visibility audit from £1,500.
