SEO Copywriting: How to Write Pages That Rank and Convert (Step-by-Step)
SEO copywriting is writing that is designed to rank in search and to persuade the person who arrives — at the same time, without compromising either. Done badly, it reads like a keyword list. Done well, the reader never notices the SEO; they just find exactly what they were looking for and take the next step. This guide covers the process we use for service pages, category pages and articles.

The rule that makes everything else work: match the search intent first, then write for the reader, then check the SEO. Never the other way round.
What SEO copywriting is (and isn’t)
It is: researching what people search and why, structuring a page so both humans and search engines understand it instantly, and writing copy that answers the query and moves the reader towards an action. It isn’t: hitting a keyword density, writing 2,000 words because a tool said so, or generating pages at scale with the town name swapped.
Step 1: Start with intent, not keywords
Search the keyword and look at what ranks. If the results are guides, Google has decided the intent is informational — a product page won’t rank no matter how well written. If the results are service pages, a blog post won’t either. Note the format, the length, the questions answered and what the top results miss. That gap is your angle.

Step 2: Build the outline before the copy
- H1: one, matching the page’s purpose and primary keyword naturally.
- Opening paragraph: answer or promise in the first two sentences. Readers and AI systems both skim here.
- H2s: the main questions the reader has, in the order they would ask them. Use People Also Ask and competitor headings as raw material.
- H3s: sub-points, steps or examples.
- Close: a clear next step — what should the reader do now?
Step 3: Write for the reader
- Lead with the answer. Put the conclusion at the top of each section, then explain.
- Use plain English. Short sentences, concrete words, no jargon you wouldn’t say aloud.
- Be specific. “Audits delivered within 10 working days” beats “fast turnaround”.
- Show evidence: numbers, examples, named sources, screenshots.
- Write to one person. “You” and “we”, not “clients” and “the agency”.
- Cut filler. Every paragraph should earn its place; if it doesn’t help the reader decide or understand, delete it.
Step 4: Layer the SEO on
- Primary keyword in the title tag, H1 and first 100 words — once, naturally.
- Variants and related terms where they fit; synonyms are fine, repetition is not.
- Descriptive subheadings that could stand alone as answers.
- Internal links to related pages with meaningful anchor text (“our technical SEO services”, not “click here”).
- Alt text that describes images for people who can’t see them.
- A meta description that sells the click honestly (it isn’t a ranking factor, but it decides whether people choose you).
Step 5: Write for AI search too
AI Overviews and chat assistants quote content that states things clearly and verifiably. Direct definitions (“X is…”), explicit numbers and dates, and clean HTML (not text hidden in tabs or images) increase the chance of citation. See our guide to GEO vs SEO for the detail.
Common SEO copywriting mistakes
- Writing the keyword into every heading. It reads as spam and ranks worse.
- Burying the answer under a long introduction.
- Matching the top result’s word count instead of beating its usefulness.
- Duplicating service pages for every town with only the place name changed.
- Using AI to generate the whole page unedited — it produces generic text that says nothing specific and ranks accordingly.
- Forgetting the call to action on commercial pages.
A simple SEO copywriting template
| Section | What goes there |
|---|---|
| Title tag | Primary keyword + benefit + brand (≤ 60 chars) |
| H1 | Page purpose in the reader’s language |
| Intro (2–3 sentences) | Who this is for, what they get, why trust you |
| H2 sections | One question or benefit each; answer first, then detail |
| Proof | Numbers, examples, case studies, credentials |
| FAQ | 3–6 real questions from search and sales calls |
| CTA | One clear next step |
Frequently asked questions
How long should SEO copy be?
As long as it takes to answer the intent better than the competition. Service pages are often 600–1,200 words; in-depth guides 1,500–3,000. Length is a result, not a target.
How many times should I use my keyword?
Once in the title, H1 and opening; then only where natural. Modern search understands synonyms and context.
Can AI tools write SEO copy?
They can help with research, outlines and first drafts. Publishing unedited AI text produces generic pages that rarely rank for competitive terms.

FAQ
Questions we get asked
What is SEO copywriting?
Writing pages that match what people search for, read naturally and are structured so search engines and AI assistants can understand and cite them — then convert the visitor.
How long should an SEO page be?
As long as it takes to answer the query completely and no longer. Check what ranks: a service page is often 600–1,200 words, a guide 1,500–3,000.
Can I use AI to write SEO copy?
For research and first drafts, yes. Publish only after a human who knows the subject has edited it and added something competitors have not said.
Do you write SEO copy for clients?
Yes — service pages from £300 and articles from £175. See SEO content writing services.
